Mahama changes Chief of Staff of GAF amid calls by Ntim Fordjour on meritocracy

President John Dramani Mahama has made changes in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). He appointed Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai as the new Chief of Staff.

This decision comes after concerns from the Minority side of Parliament. They raised issues about meritocracy in recent military appointments.

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, a member of the Defence and Interior Committee, welcomed this change. He said it aligns with their push for fairness in military promotions.

The minority committee had expressed concerns about meritocracy in GAF leadership changes. They highlighted these issues regarding President Mahama's appointments.

Fordjour stated that changes have been made to earlier announced Service Chiefs. He praised Air Vice Marshal Mensah-Larkai for his well-deserved appointment. He replaces Brig Gen Ashong Annan, who was previously announced.

He noted that all newly appointed leaders are now Two-Star Generals. This move strengthens the principles of merit-based appointments, according to Fordjour.

He emphasized that promotions should reflect competence and seniority. This is crucial for maintaining morale and discipline within the armed forces.

Fordjour reiterated the Minority’s commitment to overseeing military affairs. He stressed the need for further promotions to address backlogs among Colonels and equivalents.

He stated they will ensure that promotions follow meritorious credentials to restore morale among ranks.
