President John Dramani Mahama praised Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. He recognized his role in resolving the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis. Mahama expressed hope for a similar resolution in the Bawku conflict.
The President spoke during a visit from the Asantehene at Jubilee House. He commended Otumfuo's leadership in mediating the Dagbon dispute, which lasted nearly two decades.
"Your mediation of the Dagbon crisis is one of your greatest contributions," he said. "You led Dagbon from painful division to reconciliation and renewed leadership." Thanks to Otumfuo's efforts, Dagbon is now united and strong.
The Dagbon chieftaincy crisis involved tensions between two royal families. The government formed the Committee of Eminent Chiefs to mediate this dispute.
After extensive negotiations, final funeral rites were held for the late paramount chief. This led to Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II being enskinned in January 2019, restoring peace.
Currently, Otumfuo chairs a team addressing the Bawku conflict. This dispute involves the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups over chieftaincy and land ownership.
The conflict dates back to colonial times and has caused many fatalities and displacements. It has also resulted in curfews in recent years.
President Mahama remains optimistic about peace in Bawku. He stated that Otumfuo's efforts provide hope for lasting peace. "Your diplomacy and cultural sensitivity are paving the way for enduring peace," he added.
