President John Mahama has initiated consultations with the Council of State following the submission of three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.
According to a statement by Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the petitions have been forwarded to the Council of State as required by Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
While the specific allegations remain undisclosed, this move marks the beginning of a formal constitutional process that could impact Ghana’s judiciary. The Council of State will now review the petitions and advise the President on the next steps.
Earlier this year, former President Akufo-Addo dismissed a similar petition against Chief Justice Torkornoo. The petition, filed by Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare, accused her of misconduct and incompetence but was found to lack merit after consultations with the Council of State.
Under Article 146 of the Constitution, the removal of a Chief Justice follows a structured legal process, including an investigation by a committee appointed by the President in consultation with the Council of State. The proceedings remain confidential, and the final decision rests with the President based on the committee’s recommendations.
