Mahama could have been impeached if… – Sammy Gyamfi on suspension of CJ

Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Managing Director of Goldbod, spoke about Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo. He said President John Dramani Mahama's suspension of her could have led to impeachment.

Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that the decision followed the Constitution. He noted that President Mahama does not hold personal grudges.

“President Mahama is a man without bitterness,” he stated on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show. “The decision was not driven by personal issues.”

He explained that the President acted according to Article 146. This article governs the suspension of a sitting Chief Justice.

Mr. Gyamfi clarified that Mahama consulted with the Council of State first. A committee was formed to assess the situation before any action was taken.

“Mahama is not acting out of vindictiveness,” he added. “He swore an oath to protect Ghana's Constitution.”

He cannot dismiss the Chief Justice arbitrarily; he must follow legal procedures.

The National Communications Officer for the NDC mentioned past situations as well. Former President Akufo-Addo faced multiple petitions against a Chief Justice, some ignored.

“We have precedents that define how these matters should be handled,” he said.

Mr. Gyamfi stated that Mahama focuses on people's welfare and constitutional integrity, not personal vendettas.

The suspension was announced on April 22 after a committee was established. This committee will investigate several petitions against the Chief Justice and follows consultations with the Council of State.
