President John Dramani Mahama thanked the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. He credited him for shaping his political journey. The Asantehene persuaded Mahama to be the running mate of late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills. At that time, Mahama was considering leaving politics.
During a visit to Manhyia Palace, Mahama recalled a pivotal moment. He received a call saying, “Otumfuo wants you in Manhyia.” This invitation changed his life and Ghanaian politics.
Mahama said, “It was Otumfuo’s words that convinced me.” He had planned to retire from politics before this conversation.
He praised the Asantehene as “a national icon of peace and visionary leadership.” Mahama highlighted Otumfuo's role in resolving chieftaincy disputes and promoting unity.
To honor the region's importance, President Mahama pledged to complete key projects in Ashanti Region. These include:
1. Completing the Maternity and Children’s Block at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). This facility aims to improve maternal and child health in northern Ghana.
2. Finishing the Accra–Kumasi Highway, vital for trade and mobility.
3. Expanding Kumasi International Airport to enhance regional connectivity.
4. Delivering the Kumasi City Traffic Programme to reduce congestion.
5. Constructing two military hospitals to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.
President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive national development. He promised that Ashanti Region would remain central to Ghana’s progress.
“This is not about politics; it is about legacy, service, and nation-building,” he stated.
