Mahama credits economic gains to policy reforms, unveils major road projects under ‘Big Push Programme’

President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana’s economy is showing signs of recovery. This improvement is due to policy reforms and fiscal discipline by his administration. He spoke during his Thank You Tour in the Upper West Region. The President noted a stabilizing cedi and a gradual drop in living costs as positive indicators.

“Real work begins now,” he stated. “I’m here not just to say thank you but to reassure you that your voice has been heard.” He emphasized that every vote has a purpose, which is to bring development to the region.

He attributed the economic improvements to tough policy choices made early in his term. The 2024 budget is seen as a turning point for the economy. “Since taking over, our focus has been on stabilizing the economy,” he explained.

In March, they presented a budget aimed at cutting spending. The saved revenue will be directed into priority programs promised in their manifesto. “I’m happy to report that our efforts are yielding results,” he added.

The President praised his economic management team for their collaboration. He specifically commended the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana for their coordination during this recovery phase. “By August, we’ll have even more good news for Ghanaians,” he said.

On infrastructure, President Mahama announced upcoming major projects under the Big Push Programme. Roads will be a top priority for these projects. “Cabinet will soon approve priority projects under this program,” he revealed.

These projects include dualizing key highways and constructing major bridges. Specific roads mentioned are Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Takoradi, and Accra-Aflao roads. Major bridges like Dambai Bridge and Echia-Mangfrum Bridge will also be addressed.

Additionally, there will be a new expressway between Accra and Kumasi. This expressway aims to reduce travel time between these cities to two and a half hours.

President Mahama highlighted concerns about poor roads in the Upper West Region during his campaign. He noted that this issue prompted its inclusion in national priorities under the Big Push Programme. “We are prioritizing the Watumu–Bolgatanga Trunk Road,” he said.

He reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to inclusive development across all regions of Ghana. Special attention will be given to historically neglected areas like Upper West Region. “We aim to bring transformational change everywhere in Ghana,” he concluded.
