Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has made an important announcement. President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education. This decision comes after a threat from the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT). They planned to strike on April 30 due to delayed promotions for junior-ranked teachers.
Iddrisu spoke at the launch of a sanitary pad distribution initiative for schoolgirls on April 24. He assured that promotions would happen regardless of office space or formal postings. He noted that many deputy directors struggle to advance due to limited office availability.
“President Mahama has directed the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to promote these deputy directors,” he stated. “Even without office space, they will serve as directors.”
The Free Pad initiative supports President Mahama’s vision for gender equality in education. He previously highlighted the need to address barriers girls face during menstruation. In his first State of the Nation Address, he stressed removing these obstacles.
This program aims to reduce financial burdens on families and improve school attendance among girls. It also seeks to enhance their overall health and well-being. The initiative will help create a more inclusive learning environment by providing essential menstrual hygiene products.
