President John Dramani Mahama has pledged half of his salary. This money will support Ghana’s healthcare sector through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
His goal is to improve access to quality healthcare. This is especially for patients with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. President Mahama announced this on April 29 during the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also called Mahama Cares.
The Mahama Cares initiative aims to provide financial support. It focuses on individuals suffering from chronic illnesses. The initiative seeks to improve healthcare access for those facing financial barriers.
At the launch event at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, President Mahama shared personal stories. He recalled how his father died from prostate cancer in 2001. His mother passed away due to hypertension-related complications in 2016.
He also mentioned a staff member’s child who needs costly weekly dialysis for survival. This child suffers from chronic kidney disease.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of supporting the health sector. He urged individuals and businesses to contribute to the Mahama Cares initiative.
He encouraged corporate entities, including banks and mines, to participate in this effort. “Consider that you are giving to your own staff or customers,” he said.
He asked all corporations in Ghana to donate part of their annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. He believes this will greatly benefit the country’s healthcare system.
