Mahama gov’t betrayed us with fuel levy after 15% fare cut – GPRTU

Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer of GPRTU, has spoken out. He claims the John Mahama government has betrayed transport operators. This betrayal comes after a 15% fare cut was agreed upon.

Imoro stated that the government had the GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy but did not disclose it during negotiations. He expressed frustration on Citi Eyewitness News, saying they should have informed them about this levy.

He added that if they had known about the levy, their fare reduction would have been different. The 15% cut and the GH₵1 per litre do not match up, he noted.

Imoro also mentioned that the union is considering a nationwide strike. They have given the government until June 10 to engage with them or face action.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has signed the Energy Sector Levy into law. He explained that energy sector debt has hindered economic growth for years.

Mahama stated that this levy aims to eliminate energy sector debts and resolve ongoing crises. He emphasized his commitment to creating lower tariffs and better service for Ghanaians.

He referred to this act as a temporary solution to address power sector issues. Mahama expressed hope that they will eventually relieve Ghanaians of this levy in the future.
