The government of President John Mahama has officially scrapped the “closed season” for canoe fishermen, fulfilling a key 2024 campaign promise.
Fisheries Minister Emelia Arthur announced the decision on Nyansapo 89.9 FM, stating that while industrial trawlers will still observe the ban, artisanal fishers are now exempt.
Mahama had argued during his campaign that industrial vessels, not traditional canoe fishing, were the primary cause of declining marine stocks.
Despite lifting the restriction, Arthur, who is also MP for Shama, warned against illegal fishing practices, stressing that offenders will face strict penalties.
The cancellation takes immediate effect, marking a significant shift in Ghana’s fisheries management policy.
