Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He claims Mahama has returned to power with "vengeance in his heart." This statement follows recent political events that have upset the public.
Afenyo-Markin spoke on Monday, May 5. He was part of a New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstration against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension. The NPP also submitted a petition to Parliament during this event.
After presenting the petition, Afenyo-Markin expressed serious concerns. He believes state institutions are being politicized under the current administration.
“It is clear that President Mahama is not seeking reconciliation,” he stated. “We see actions aimed at breaking down institutions, not building them.”
He argued that the Chief Justice's suspension reflects a larger agenda. This agenda seeks to undermine judicial independence and silence dissent.
“We must not let personal vendettas shape national policy,” Afenyo-Markin warned. “This country deserves leadership based on justice and reconciliation, not retribution.”
The NPP demonstration attracted many supporters and civil society members. Organizers called the Chief Justice's suspension unconstitutional and politically motivated.
The petition urges immediate investigation into her suspension and calls for restoring constitutional order.
