Mahama hints of modality for reintroduction of road tolls

President John Mahama hinted at reintroducing road tolls on Monday. This information is part of the 2025 Economic Policy and Budget Statement.

He mentioned plans to digitize road toll booths. Car owners' Ghana cards will be linked to their vehicles. When a car passes through a toll booth, a picture will be taken. A bill of GH¢1.00 will then be sent to the owner's mobile money or bank account.

The President shared this during his speech at the 2025 Ghana CEOs’ Summit in Accra. He noted ongoing discussions about how to collect these tolls effectively.

Mahama stated that every car is now linked to its owner’s Ghana card. This means old toll gates and manual processes are no longer needed. The system will be fully digitalized for convenience.

“If it’s one cedi, it’s just one cedi,” he said. For example, crossing the East Legon Bridge will only cost one cedi. The system will take a picture of your car and send the bill directly for payment.

The theme of the 2025 Ghana CEOs’ Summit is “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset.” It focuses on transforming business and governance for a sustainable economy.

President Mahama described the Summit as an important platform for strategic thinking. It brings together influential economic actors in the nation.

He emphasized that the theme challenges participants to reflect on past successes and failures. They must also define future goals for the country.

Ernest De-Graft Egyir, Founder/CEO of Ghana CEOs’ Summit, praised its role in shaping Ghana's economic future. He thanked President Mahama for being a regular guest speaker at the event.
