Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third term – Manasseh Azure

Manasseh Azure Awuni, an award-winning investigative journalist, has responded to allegations against President John Dramani Mahama. Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claim he is plotting for a third term.

Manasseh Azure believes President Mahama is too decent for such thoughts. He shared his opinion on social media, stating, “I think John Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third term.”

Justin Frimpong Kodua from the NPP linked the alleged plot against Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo to this claim. He argued that some individuals want to interpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution differently. They suggest that the two-term limit applies only to consecutive terms.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin spoke at the “Save the Judiciary Demo.” He claimed President Mahama no longer sees himself as a leader but as an autocrat. He pointed out that many guests at Mahama's inauguration were military dictators and authoritarian sympathizers.

Afenyo-Markin accused Mahama of having a cynical agenda to amend the Constitution for a third term. He stated that since taking office, Mahama has used security services against political opponents.

He mentioned private citizens like former Central Bank Governor Dr. Addison had their properties seized and rights violated. Afenyo-Markin described this as tyranny disguised as democracy.

He also criticized dismissals of senior military officers who served faithfully. The military's non-partisanship is now compromised, he said, calling it a dangerous betrayal.

Afenyo-Markin noted that Mahama’s actions indicate he wants to break the Constitution and extend his power with judicial support.

In response, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga stated that Afenyo-Markin is planting these allegations in Ghanaians' minds about President Mahama's intentions.
