Kwame Jantuah, a legal practitioner and member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), praised President John Dramani Mahama. He commended Mahama for keeping his promise to abolish the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy). Jantuah described the E-Levy as “theft on the people’s money.”
During a panel discussion on Morning Starr, Jantuah criticized the E-Levy and its creators. He stated, “The e-levy was theft on the people’s money and it’s a good thing it went.” He noted that the policy did not fulfill its initial promises.
Jantuah recalled how officials promoted the E-Levy as a solution for Ghana. They claimed it would provide benefits that tolls could not. However, he pointed out that tolls were removed, yet many roads remain in poor condition.
He argued that imposing the E-Levy led to significant public backlash. This backlash contributed to the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) electoral defeat.
Jantuah congratulated President Mahama for honoring his commitment. He believes that if NPP leaders had listened to public concerns earlier, they could have modified the E-Levy to gain acceptance.
