Former MP Samuel Atta Akyea has urged President John Dramani Mahama to address rising "security thuggery." He warns that heavy-handed law enforcement could harm public trust in the rule of law.
In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Atta Akyea acknowledged Mahama's unique return to power. He believes this gives Mahama an advantage. However, he expressed concern about aggressive arrests and politically charged investigations. These actions are creating a “gangster-like” atmosphere around his renewed mandate.
Atta Akyea stated, “If you look at Ghana's political history since 1957, President Mahama is the most blessed person ever.” He noted that Mahama has the experience of a previous presidency. After eight years on the sidelines, he has observed former President Akufo-Addo's actions.
He praised Mahama’s leadership style as “vintage.” Atta Akyea hopes for wisdom and success in his second term. He added, “It’s too early to make any serious assessment of what he has done so far.”
However, he raised concerns about recent law enforcement developments. He believes they are casting a shadow over the administration. “The nation is dragging on security thuggery,” he said. He urged Mahama to rein in these issues.
Atta Akyea criticized some arrest methods and emphasized dignity and due process. He stated that individuals should be invited without unnecessary drama. “I don’t believe someone should be handcuffed at the airport,” he said.
He also opposed cornering individuals on the street before investigations. “There should be respect for due process in investigations,” he added.
His comments follow the arrest of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, who is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
