Majority Leader and MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has rejected claims by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Afenyo-Markin alleged that President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC are pursuing a "third term agenda." He made this claim on Thursday, May 1.
Afenyo-Markin argued that President Mahama's recent nomination of seven justices to the Supreme Court is part of this strategy. He stated, “It is obvious that the bold attempts by the president to nominate seven judges are the first major attempt at all that they have rehearsed — a third term agenda.”
In response, Ayariga spoke on Citi Prime News on May 2. He called Afenyo-Markin's assertion baseless and politically motivated. “I think he is the one who is putting the idea in the minds of Ghanaians,” he said.
Ayariga added that he hasn't heard Ghanaians discussing this topic. He emphasized that even NDC strategists are not having such conversations.
He explained that rumors about Mahama seeking a third term began before he filed to contest for NDC flagbearer in 2024. “Some people threatened to go to the Supreme Court to stop him from contesting because they thought he would run for a third term,” Ayariga noted.
