Mahama orchestrated CJ’s suspension – Nana B claims

Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, is the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has accused President John Dramani Mahama of suspending Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Nana B claims this decision was planned in advance. He pointed to a previous meeting where Mahama expressed dissatisfaction with the judiciary.

On April 22, President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo. This followed a prima facie case related to three petitions for her removal. The suspension was made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and involved consultation with the Council of State. A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter.

In response, a coalition of political parties, including the NPP, plans a nationwide protest on May 5. In an interview on April 24, Nana B stated that democracy is under threat. He urged citizens to resist what he called an attack on the judiciary.

He said, "Our democracy is under attack; our judiciary is under attack." He accused the President of advertising his intentions to remove the Chief Justice. "This is just a plan in motion," he added.

Nana B described this as premeditated activity before the 2024 elections. He recalled Mahama's comments during a meeting with lawyers in Volta region about making changes if elected. "Today, we have a case where the President has orchestrated this suspension," he stated. "It has never happened before."
