Mahama orders immediate security reinforcement in Bono East over surge in armed robberies

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Interior Minister and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to send more security personnel to the Bono East Region. This decision comes due to rising highway and armed robberies, especially along the eastern corridor.

During his “Thank You Tour” in Kintampo, Mr. Mahama acknowledged growing insecurity in areas like Atebubu, Amente, Sene East and West, and Pru districts. He noted that robbery cases have become increasingly common.

“We are aware of the challenges in the eastern corridor of Bono East,” he said. He added that he has directed additional security deployments to areas facing rampant robberies.

The President also announced plans to provide police with patrol vehicles and communication equipment. This will help enhance their ability to combat crime and ensure public safety.

In a governance update, Mr. Mahama revealed a policy change for evaluating Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). The Cabinet has approved new guidelines for using the District Assembly Common Fund.

“Eighty percent of the funds will go directly to the regions,” he stated. He emphasized that MMDCEs will be assessed based on how well they use these resources.

The President received a warm welcome in Kintampo from hundreds of residents. Nana Pimampim Yaw Kagbrese V, President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs, praised the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

“You have reduced the dollar to cedi to 11 cedis; now I hear it is 10 cedis,” he said. The chief expressed hope that it would drop further to single digits by July.

Mr. Mahama also discussed falling costs for Hajj pilgrimage fares due to a stronger cedi. This year’s fare decreased from GHS75,000 to GHS62,000 and may fall below GHS50,000 next year if trends continue.

Additionally, he confirmed that Eid al-Fitr will become a statutory public holiday. “The bill to amend the Holiday Act is ready for Parliament,” he announced. From next year onward, it will be enshrined in law without needing an executive instrument.
