President John Dramani Mahama has called for an immediate investigation into the deadly clash between illegal miners and military personnel at AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mines, which resulted in the deaths of eight miners.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, when about 60 illegal miners breached the mine's security fence, attempting to access its Deep Decline area.

Armed with locally made rifles, pump-action guns, knives, and other tools, the miners reportedly opened fire, prompting soldiers to retaliate in self-defense.

In a statement issued on January 19, President Mahama expressed profound regret over the tragic loss of life, extended condolences to the bereaved families, and urged swift action to bring any unlawful actors to justice.

The government directed AngloGold Ashanti to fully cover medical costs for the injured and assist with burial arrangements for the deceased. Security agencies have been tasked with restoring calm and preventing future incidents.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed seven fatalities and revealed one miner sustained serious injuries during the confrontation. Investigations are ongoing.
