Mahama plotting a third term agenda in disguise – Afenyo Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has made a bold claim. He says President John Dramani Mahama is secretly planning a third term.

Afenyo-Markin pointed to Mahama's recent nomination of seven judges to the Supreme Court. He also mentioned attempts to remove the Chief Justice as part of this agenda.

At a press conference on May 1, he stated, “We are going on a peaceful demonstration.” He emphasized that this is not just a parliamentary issue. It concerns every citizen who values the rule of law.

He urged the government to avoid division and anger from the past. Decisions made today can impact future governments, he warned.

Afenyo-Markin said Mahama’s nominations are not routine appointments. Instead, they represent a strategic effort to fill the Supreme Court with loyalists. The timing of these nominations raises concerns about political ambitions.

“This is how a government tightens its grip on power,” he added. He called for resistance against turning the justice system into a political tool.

Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the NPP, echoed similar concerns. He accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of plotting for Mahama's third term.

Kodua linked efforts to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo to this alleged plot. He claimed some individuals want to reinterpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution.

This reinterpretation could suggest that two-term limits apply only to consecutive terms.
