Mahama promises 200,000-hectare cocoa expansion to revitalise industry

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a new initiative for Ghana’s cocoa industry. He plans to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa farms to boost production.

The announcement took place during his tour of the Ahafo Region on Saturday, May 31. This visit is part of his nationwide Thank You tour.

While speaking to cocoa farmers and supporters, President Mahama emphasized his commitment to reviving the cocoa sector. He said, “Plans are underway to revamp the collapsed cocoa sector.”

He promised incentives for hardworking farmers to increase production. The goal is to enhance farmers' income by expanding cocoa output.

President Mahama also mentioned that COCOBOD's Chief Executive, Mr. Randy Abbey, will announce a new producer price in August. He believes this price adjustment will benefit farmers.

He encouraged those without cocoa farms to find land and start planting.

Ghana’s cocoa industry has faced many challenges recently. These include declining yields, cross-border smuggling, and low producer prices.

The proposed expansion and incentives aim to tackle these issues. They hope to revitalize the sector and restore confidence among farmers seeking support.
