Mahama promises new Accra-Kumasi expressway to cut travel time by half

President John Dramani Mahama has announced new infrastructure plans. Cabinet will soon approve road and bridge projects under the "Big Push initiative." This initiative aims to cut travel time and improve access across Ghana.

During his tour of the Upper West Region on May 15, Mahama highlighted key projects. A major focus will be on roads, essential for national development.

One notable project is a new expressway between Accra and Kumasi. This expressway will reduce travel time from over five hours to just two and a half hours.

Mahama also mentioned plans to dualize major highways like Accra-Takoradi and Accra-Aflao roads. Additionally, important bridge projects will include the Dambai Bridge and Kyeiamanfrom Bridge. The rehabilitation of Buipe, Daboya, and Yapei bridges is also planned.

In the Upper West Region, he pointed out key areas for improvement. The Wa-Tumu-Bolgatanga Trunk Road will be upgraded along with the Techiman-Wenchi-Bole-Wa-Hamile corridor. Roads in districts like Wa-East and Nadowli will also see upgrades.

For funding, GH₵14 billion has been allocated for the Big Push this year. Mahama assured that contractors would receive 15% of the contract sum upfront for mobilization. Payments will be made within two weeks after submitting certificates.

“We want to see work continuing as soon as the contract is awarded,” Mahama emphasized.
