Mahama reaffirms commitment to strengthening chieftaincy institutions

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to chieftaincy institutions. He views traditional rulers as essential partners in Ghana’s democracy and development.

During a visit from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, President Mahama emphasized the importance of traditional leadership. He stated that it is central to the country’s identity and progress.

“As President, I assure you of our commitment to work with chieftaincy,” he said. “We do not see traditional leadership as a relic but as vital for our future.”

He announced the revival of the Constitutional Review Implementation Committee. This aligns with recommendations from the 2011 Constitutional Review Commission.

The review aims to strengthen democratic culture and clarify roles between traditional authorities and the state. It will enhance governance through greater inclusion and accountability.

“The Constitution must reflect our people's realities—both rural and urban,” he noted. It should also respond to society's evolving needs.

The review will explore how to incorporate chiefs' wisdom into national governance without compromising their non-partisan role.

Additionally, President Mahama revealed plans for a National Governance Advisory Council. This council will facilitate dialogue between traditional leaders, civil society, and the state.

“This initiative ensures that 'Nananom' voices shape public policy and guide national development,” he concluded.
