Mahama reopens Ayawaso West Wuogon case with DSP Azugu assisting investigators

President John Dramani Mahama has reopened investigations into the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence.

He stated that “justice will be served” for the victims of this tragic event.

In a national address, he marked 120 days since starting his second term. President Mahama revealed that ASP Samuel Kojo Azugu is cooperating with investigators. Azugu was the commander of the National Security SWAT team during the January 31, 2019, by-election.

“ASP Azugu was involved in the violence and is now helping,” he said. He aims to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the violence.

The President emphasized that reopening this case is vital for restoring public trust in Ghana’s justice system.

“Delivering justice is crucial for national healing and trust,” he added.

He mentioned promises to reopen major unresolved criminal cases. These include the 2020 election killings and murders of Ahmed Hussein-Suale and Silas Wulochamey.

The new Inspector General of Police has formed a special task force for these investigations. “Progress is being made,” he noted.

Regarding Ahmed Hussein-Suale's murder, Mahama announced a breakthrough. “Six years later, police arrested a suspect who has been remanded,” he said.

He also discussed reviving other stalled cases. In Techiman South, investigations continue after two deaths during the 2020 elections.

In Odododiodoo, three people face charges of conspiracy and murder. In Ablekuma Central, a military officer allegedly caused a death; investigations are ongoing there too.

Mahama stated that Silas Wulochamey's case has reopened due to new intelligence. The death of Kofi Robert in Dormaa West is also back on track with one suspect in custody.

In Savelugu, efforts continue to find Zakaria Samira's killer despite witness reluctance to cooperate.

He addressed violence from recent 2024 elections as well. Cases from Tolon, Damongo, Awutu Senya East, Nkoranza South, Offinso North, and Ahafo Ano South West are under investigation by the Special Task Force.

“These senseless deaths should never happen again,” he stressed.

President Mahama vowed not to let political violence go unpunished. “Elections should choose leaders—not murder citizens,” he said.

He announced that the Attorney General will prepare a report recommending compensation for victims and their families.
