The Minority in Parliament has sharply criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s 120-day performance report. They accuse him of abandoning his reformist agenda from the campaign. Instead, they claim he is overseeing a “recycled failure.”
At a press conference on May 8, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin dismissed the President’s national address. He called it a hollow display of self-congratulation. He said it does not reflect the realities faced by Ghanaians. Afenyo-Markin argued that the President's social contract remains largely unfulfilled.
“This is not just a speech; it is a call to remembrance and resistance,” he stated. He described it as an audit of a presidency that campaigned urgently but now governs indifferently. The Minority Leader expressed concern about the administration's early promise faltering.
He claimed President Mahama's leadership is entering its “lame duck days.” “Now the 120 days are over, promises have collapsed,” he said. “Let it be said plainly — you were sold a recycled failure.”
Afenyo-Markin accused the government of betraying voters' trust for political gain. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and defend democracy. “Rise up to defend the Republic,” he implored Ghanaians.
This criticism follows President Mahama’s national broadcast, where he claimed significant progress in 120 days. He mentioned reforms like repealing controversial taxes and improving legislative accountability. However, Afenyo-Markin argued these achievements are superficial.
He contended they do not address pressing issues like economic hardship and mass unemployment. The government's claims, he said, are merely “cosmetic” and fail to resolve deep-seated challenges facing Ghana.
