Mahama’s Baptism Of Fire … As GPRTU, Other Unions Threaten To Strike On Monday

Asonaba Nana Wiredu is the Deputy Secretary of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (CDAG).

CDAG has threatened a nationwide strike if road trading regulations are not enforced.

These regulations, from the Road Traffic Regulations Act of 2012, prohibit trading on roads and pavements.

Commercial transport operators plan to strike on Monday, May 19, 2025. They want “concrete steps” taken to enforce these traffic rules.

Wiredu announced this intention on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. He urged the government to act on enforcing the law.

The strike is led by CDAG, Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and True Drivers’ Union. Their goal is to create designated parking spaces in Central Business Districts (CBDs) across Ghana.

In an interview with Otec FM, Wiredu highlighted Sub-regulation 117 of the Act. This regulation prohibits selling goods on roads or pedestrian walkways near intersections and railway crossings.

Violating this regulation can result in a fine or imprisonment for up to three months.

Wiredu pointed out that authorities have not enforced this law effectively. This negligence puts both drivers and passengers at risk.

He explained that vehicles can malfunction at any time, leading to accidents. The lack of enforcement has worsened traffic congestion and unsafe road conditions.

Additionally, new markets do not include designated parking spaces for vehicles.

Wiredu called on the Ghana Police and government to enforce these laws strictly. He wants action against traders who violate regulations to improve vehicle movement in CBDs.

If their concerns are ignored, transport unions will proceed with their planned strike action.
