President John Dramani Mahama has announced a plan to boost local poultry production. This initiative aims to reduce Ghana's reliance on imported chicken.
He launched the Feed Ghana Programme in Techiman, Bono East Region. During the event, he introduced the ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ initiative. This initiative is crucial for strengthening the country's poultry industry.
“Ghana imports almost $400 million worth of chicken every year,” Mahama said. He emphasized that this situation should make everyone ashamed. There is an urgent need to invest in local production systems.
The Nkoko Nketenkete initiative means comprehensive poultry. It will be implemented with the Poultry Farmers Association. The program will support key areas of the poultry value chain.
These areas include hatcheries, feed mills, veterinary services, and processing centers. “Our farm-to-table project will help these sectors,” Mahama explained.
The Feed Ghana Programme aims for agricultural self-sufficiency. It seeks to reduce imports and create jobs in the sector. With this new plan, the President hopes to turn a weakness into strength.
He wants local chicken to be both a patriotic choice and economically sustainable.
