Mahama’s galamsey fight is full of ‘lies and insincerity – Lawyer Brako-Powers

Private lawyer Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers criticized President John Dramani Mahama's approach to illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey.

In a Facebook post, he questioned the government's sincerity and strategy. He warned that Mahama's legacy after 2028 will depend on how he addresses the environmental crisis.

Brako-Powers stated, “Mahama’s handling of galamsey will define his legacy after 2028.” He believes Ghanaians deserve clear timelines to end this growing disaster.

He expressed disbelief over the government’s decision to deploy unarmed civilians in the new Water Guard initiative. He called this move careless and illogical.

“What is Water Guard? I’m shocked that any serious government would do this,” he said. He criticized leaders for sending unarmed civilians into dangerous areas dominated by armed individuals.

Brako-Powers argued that ending galamsey requires genuine political will and decisive leadership. He believes if Mahama truly wanted to control the crisis, he could act immediately.

“Mahama can end galamsey today if he’s committed,” he stated. However, he doubts the government's commitment to winning this fight.

He sees insincerity and dishonesty in government officials' discussions about the issue.

Brako-Powers urged Ghana's youth to take action against illegal mining's long-term effects on their future.

“The youth must rise! The youth must wise up! This is not funny anymore,” he concluded. “This is our only HOME. Let’s make it better!”
