Haruna Mohammed, the MP for Asunafo North, praised President John Dramani Mahama. He highlighted Mahama's commitment to youth development. The separation of the Youth Ministry from the Sports Ministry is a significant change.
Mohammed spoke about this on Citi Eyewitness News on May 21. He noted that Ghana’s youth make up about 70% of the population. Previously, they were overlooked in budget allocations due to their merger with sports.
He argued that this structure focused too much on sports funding. This came at the expense of broader youth initiatives. "They [youth] are fortunate to be in this government," he said.
Mohammed stated that Mahama is the first president to make this change. He pointed out past budget allocations as well. Historically, 80% of funds went to Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars.
"Every budget had 80% directed to the Black Stars," he explained. The MP believes recent budgets show a shift in priorities. Youth development now receives substantial funding.
"The latest budget allocated GHS60 million for Sports and over GHS1.5 billion for Youth," he revealed. Mohammed praised various programs led by the Youth Ministry. These programs offer valuable opportunities for young people across Ghana.
"You can talk of Adwumawura and the National Apprenticeship Programme," he remarked. "These initiatives give me hope and my people hope."
