Mahama says Ghana's administrative centre must be moved to ease Accra congestion

Mahama Proposes New Administrative City to Ease Congestion in Accra

John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, has proposed a new administrative city. He believes Accra is too congested for effective government services and business growth.

Mahama's plan includes areas from Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern Regions. He aims to create a growth pole for Ghana. Despite this move, he assures that Accra will remain the capital.

He shared his proposal during a meeting with the EU Ambassador on May 28, 2024. Mahama noted that current decentralisation efforts have not sufficiently improved service delivery in Accra.

He sees the new administrative centre as a long-term solution to congestion issues. If reelected, Mahama plans to start planning and feasibility studies for the project. He estimates it will take about 20 years to complete.

The proposed city would be near Volta Lake and span multiple regions. Mahama envisions it as a green, digital metropolis operating 24 hours a day. He believes this city could significantly boost regional and national growth.

Additionally, establishing a port terminal at Mpakadan could enhance its economic viability. However, he reiterated that Accra would still be Ghana's capital.

In related news, heavy rains recently caused flooding in parts of Accra. On May 22, 2024, many roads were submerged under water. Areas like Dzorwulu and Dansoman experienced significant flooding.

The Ministry of Local Government has donated drones to monitor flooding situations. These drones will help assemblies track illegal dumping in drains during rainy weather. The assemblies are instructed to maintain these expensive drones properly.
