Mahama swears in new Military Commanders to Armed Forces Council

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in new service commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces. The ceremony took place on Thursday at the Ministry of Defence. This event precedes a Council meeting to discuss promotions and military retooling.

The newly appointed commanders are Major General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, Chief of Air Staff.

In his speech, President Mahama urged the commanders to maintain professionalism and integrity. He highlighted the Armed Forces' vital role in ensuring national peace and security.

Key members of the Armed Forces Council attended the ceremony. They included Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka, and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Other attendees were Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama and Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari.

The Armed Forces Council advises the President on organizing and administering the Ghana Armed Forces. This includes appointments, promotions, and personnel welfare. The Council will meet regularly to address strategic concerns for enhancing military readiness.
