Mahama sworn-in as President to complete historic comeback

Mahama Sworn In as President for Historic Comeback

John Dramani Mahama and his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, have been sworn into office. The inauguration took place at Black Star Square. Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin presided over the event. Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo administered the oaths.

Mahama is now the 6th President of Ghana's Fourth Republic. He previously served as the 4th President. Opoku-Agyemang makes history as Ghana's first female vice president.

In his inaugural speech, Mahama praised former President Akufo-Addo. He called Akufo-Addo a worthy opponent and a longtime friend. Both entered politics around the same time and share mutual respect.

Mahama acknowledged Akufo-Addo's democratic maturity during his tenure. He thanked him for contributions to national development and called for unity.

Mahama also commended former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his sportsmanship. Bawumia’s early concession in the 2024 election helped ease tensions nationwide.

Mahama described campaigning against Bawumia as challenging but rewarding. He appreciated Bawumia’s acceptance of the election results, which promoted peace and stability.

He urged Ghanaians to maintain this peace and promised an inclusive government.

Mahama won the presidency with 56.55% of the vote, totaling 6,328,397 votes from 267 constituencies. Former Vice President Bawumia received 41.61% with 4,657,304 votes.

This victory makes Mahama Ghana's first former president to return as head of state.
