Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership. He accused them of wasting time and creating unnecessary political tension. This follows the Supreme Court's dismissal of an injunction by MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah. The injunction aimed to stop the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Pratt spoke on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana with host Moro Awudu. He expressed disbelief at comments from NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah. Ahiagbah claimed the NPP isn’t concerned about the constitution; it’s just politics.
Pratt found this troubling. He questioned the NPP’s legal challenge regarding the Chief Justice's removal. Even party communicators admit there is no legal basis for it.
“They’re in court over a dream that Mahama may declare a third term,” he said. “Why waste the court’s time with such an issue?”
He added that claiming the President is merely following constitutional procedures undermines their argument. “If you have a bad dream and hold the country to ransom, something is wrong,” he stated.
Pratt asked if Mahama has ever declared his intention for a third term, noting there’s nothing in the Constitution suggesting this.
In response, Dr. Kingsley Nyarko, MP for Kwadaso, defended the NPP's concerns. He cited Mahama’s past comment about needing a new Chief Justice to restore judicial image.
Dr. Nyarko argued this statement hints at a political agenda against the Chief Justice. He claimed it raises red flags about Mahama’s intentions.
“This isn’t just politics,” he said. “The President's posture suggests constitutional violations.”
