Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration on March 6, 2025, will be a scaled-down event at the presidency instead of the usual grand ceremony at Independence Square.
Announcing the decision, Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated that President John Dramani Mahama opted for a modest celebration to cut costs amid economic challenges.
The rotational hosting of Independence Day in regional capitals has also been suspended due to financial constraints, with the last event in Ho costing GHS 15 million.
The ceremony will feature a military guard of honor, cultural performances, and a presidential address.
Other related events include the commemoration of the Christianborg crossroads shooting and the Presidential Awards for schoolchildren.
