Mahama to launch Adwumawura Programme today to tackle youth unemployment

President John Mahama will launch the ‘Adwumawura’ programme today. The event takes place in Kumasi at the Prempeh Assembly Hall.

This initiative aims to reduce youth unemployment in Ghana. It also seeks to inspire entrepreneurial spirit among young people.

The Adwumawura Programme is a business start-up initiative. It plans to create, track, and mentor at least 10,000 businesses each year. The focus is on empowering young entrepreneurs.

The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment will drive this programme. It will operate through the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP).

Targeting Ghanaians aged 18 to 35, the programme offers essential tools for success. This support aims to help thousands achieve economic independence.

Adwumawura is a key part of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto. The party promises to create 250,000 jobs annually through various initiatives. This includes the well-known “Edwuma Pa” programme.

The Mahama-led Government emphasizes entrepreneurship and skills development. They aim to position Ghana’s youth as leaders in economic growth.

In March, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson presented the 2025 Budget Statement. It allocated GH₵100 million to kickstart the Adwumawura programme.

These funds will support young entrepreneurs with training and mentorship. They will also provide access to start-up capital and equipment.

Additionally, the National Apprenticeship Programme will offer free technical training. This includes certification and post-training start-up support for participants.

This dual approach addresses youth unemployment by combining entrepreneurial support with practical skills training.

To further assist new businesses, start-ups will receive tax exemptions for two years. This measure aims to ease financial pressures during their early stages.

Minister George Opare Addo reaffirmed the Government's commitment in a video message. He stated that they are fulfilling their promise of creating sustainable jobs for young people ahead of the 2024 election.
