President John Mahama has announced plans to reinstate July 1 as a statutory public holiday, restoring its historical significance as Republic Day and Senior Citizens Day.
Speaking in the Western Region on his Thank You tour, he proposed observing the day as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, urging Ghanaians to reflect and appreciate the country’s progress.
To ensure a well-structured observance, Mahama will appoint a committee of religious leaders to oversee preparations.
Additionally, he confirmed that amendments to the Public Holidays Act will be presented to Parliament, not only to reinstate July 1 but also to fulfill his promise of granting an extra holiday for the Muslim community to mark Eid-ul-Fitr.
