Mahama to restore UGMC management to University of Ghana

President-elect John Mahama has announced plans to return the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana to fulfill its original purpose.

Envisioned under the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, UGMC was designed to be operated by a university subsidiary for efficiency and high-quality care.

However, Mahama expressed concern that the Ghana Health Service's management has left the facility operating at only 40% capacity.

To reduce medical tourism and optimize healthcare delivery, Mahama aims to restore the university’s oversight and scale operations to full capacity.

He emphasized that the Ghana Health Service is already overburdened with numerous hospitals, making the return to UG’s management a practical solution.
