President John Mahama has called on public sector workers to report mismanagement in state enterprises.
He expressed concern about the declining performance of many state-owned enterprises.
At the 2025 National May Parade in Accra, he criticized the previous government's management over the last eight years.
“I urge you not to stay silent when management is ruining your enterprise,” he said.
“You are the first affected by job losses when these institutions fail.”
He emphasized that workers should protect their enterprises, which guarantee lifelong employment.
“When things go wrong, don’t be afraid to speak up,” he added.
“As President, I will support you in making things right.”
During a conference on March 13, Mahama discussed the debt of state-owned enterprises. He noted that almost all were in debt.
“Even GIHOC Distilleries owes money now,” he said. “How can you sell alcohol and be in debt?”
He questioned how businesses could lose money when Ghanaians drink during happy and sad times.
Mahama urged management and workers to collaborate for viable institutions. “These enterprises belong to all of us,” he stated.
He reminded public sector workers that there are millions of working-age individuals wanting jobs but facing barriers due to limited opportunities.
He acknowledged that a large youth population poses risks to national stability. This is why he recently launched job creation initiatives for unemployed youth.
Mahama assured workers they need a government that supports them through hardships and prosperity.
He promised that his government would be there for them.
As part of constitutional reforms, Mahama mentioned plans for a Permanent Independent Emoluments Commission. This commission would create a fair wage structure for public service employees.
The goal is to bridge the gap between Article 71 office holders and other public sector workers.
