Mahama vows to demolish buildings in waterways to curb flooding

President John Dramani Mahama has warned against illegal construction on waterways, wetlands, and Ramsar sites. He vowed to demolish unauthorized structures that cause flooding and destruction.

At the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at Black Star Square, he condemned the disregard for environmental laws. This negligence puts lives and properties at risk.

“I must address a deeply troubling issue,” he said. “Illegal buildings in waterways are causing flooding and extensive property damage.”

He noted that the rainy season is approaching. Already, flooding is occurring because people have blocked rivers.

The President criticized not only private individuals but also some chiefs. He accused them of colluding to sell Ramsar sites for development.

“I know of cases where individuals work with chiefs to convert Ramsar sites into built-up areas,” he stated. “Let me be clear, this must stop.”

To prevent further disasters, Mahama announced plans to demolish illegal structures blocking waterways. He emphasized that the law would be strictly enforced.

“Those structures will be pulled down,” he declared. “We will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger many lives.”

He added that those who violate the law will face consequences.
