Mahama wants to change Ghana’s constitution to introduce lawlessness – MP claims

Michael Okyere Baafi, the MP for New Juaben South, has made a claim. He says President John Dramani Mahama wants to change Ghana’s constitution. Baafi believes this change would lead to lawlessness in the country.

In an interview with Movement TV, he expressed his concerns. He stated that President Mahama has befriended leaders from Sahel countries known for coups. Baafi said, “They want to change Ghana's constitution and introduce lawlessness.” He emphasized that politicians must fight against this.

Baafi also commented on Chairman Wontumi's legal troubles. He said if Wontumi violated the law, he should go to court. Wontumi is a member of the NPP and will not flee, according to Baafi. He warned that if Wontumi is not released soon, it could cause problems in Ghana.

Wontumi was arrested by EOCO after visiting the CID headquarters on May 27. He was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28. However, his legal team had not met all conditions for his release by Wednesday.

Wontumi’s lawyer explained there was a challenge delaying his release. An unexpected legal application had been filed earlier that day. The lawyer stated, “My client is not going home tonight.” They plan to address this issue on Monday.

In an interview with Oyerepa TV/FM, Andy Appiah Kubi discussed Wontumi's arrest. He confirmed that the arrest was lawful and EOCO acted correctly. Kubi explained that EOCO has powers similar to those of the police under their act.

He noted that while EOCO can arrest under warrant, warrants should come from a court. This means there is a flaw in how warrants are issued by EOCO itself. If courts issued warrants instead, they would determine their justification first.
