Mahama warns VRA leadership: No room for repeat of dam spillage disaster

President John Dramani Mahama has warned the CEO of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo, and his deputies. He stated that any repeat of the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spillage will lead to their dismissal.

In a national address, President Mahama discussed his administration’s 120-day social contract. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to accountability and disaster prevention. “We will not tolerate a repeat of the destruction caused by the recent spillage,” he said.

The President declared that VRA leadership will be held responsible if it happens again. He also confirmed that his administration has launched an official probe into the incident. The Minister for Energy inaugurated a five-member investigative committee chaired by Ing. Kirk Koffi.

This committee examined the circumstances surrounding the spillage and submitted its findings. They recommended several preventive measures, including a controlled spill flood plan. They also suggested engineering solutions downstream to better manage flood risks.

President Mahama emphasised that these recommendations will be enforced. This is to ensure public safety and prevent large-scale destruction in vulnerable communities.
