Mahama we beg slow down small, my dollar reserves all dey go waste – Kuami Eugene cries out

Ghanaian artist Kuami Eugene has asked President John Mahama to slow down the cedi's appreciation against the dollar.

He expressed concern that the strong cedi is affecting his dollar reserves. In a post on X, he wrote, “We beg Pres. John Mahama for slow down small, my dollar reserves all dey go waste.”

Kuami Eugene also mentioned that he feels both happy and sad at the same time.

President Mahama responded to claims about the cedi's future value. He noted that some people predict it could reach GHS1 to $1. However, he called this prediction extreme and warned it could collapse Ghana’s export sector.

Dr. Johnson Asiamah, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, clarified that they are not using international reserves to support the cedi. He stated that the cedi has appreciated by 24.1%.

Dr. Asiamah dismissed claims of deliberate manipulation of the exchange rate by the Central Bank. He explained that recent appreciation comes from disciplined monetary policy and improved remittance flows.

On May 26, 2025, at the Ghana CEO Summit in Accra, Dr. Asiamah elaborated on these points. He emphasized that their approach is market-driven and aims for long-term stability.

He said, “Our Cedi has appreciated by 24.1% against the US dollar... It is all market-driven.”

These changes are structural and designed for lasting stability in Ghana’s economy.

Kuami Eugene shared his thoughts on social media:
