Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He claims Mahama is hiding autocratic behavior behind a democratic facade.
Afenyo-Markin spoke during a New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstration on May 5. The protest was against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He stated that defending Ghana’s democracy is a constitutional duty.
After the group submitted a petition to Parliament, Afenyo-Markin addressed the crowd. He said, “We march today to resist the rise of a new oppressor.” He accused Mahama of governing like a dictator while pretending to be democratic.
The Minority Leader emphasized that the protest was not partisan. It was about upholding the rule of law and constitutional order.
He urged all Ghanaians to recognize the seriousness of what he called an emerging authoritarian culture. The protest attracted opposition supporters and concerned citizens alike.
They demanded transparency in the Chief Justice's suspension process. The petition submitted to Parliament called for a full investigation into this matter. It also urged a recommitment to democratic principles outlined in the 1992 Constitution.
