Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrissu, spoke about academic freedom. He assured that President John Dramani Mahama will not interfere with universities.
Iddrissu made these comments at the 10th Anniversary of the Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE). This initiative includes a network of 20 universities across Africa.
He emphasized the president's respect for university autonomy. “The President believes in supporting our institutions,” Iddrissu said.
He mentioned support could be financial or otherwise to promote knowledge and innovation. However, he stressed that the president will not compromise academic liberty.
Iddrissu stated, “The one who holds the political will is the President.” He reassured that there would be no interference with academic freedom.
“Instead, he is committed to enhancing it,” he added.
