The town of Amanokrom in the Akuapem North Constituency hosted the Ofie Market on Saturday, March 29, 2025. This local trade fair aimed to connect farmers directly with consumers. The event was led by Honourable Member of Parliament, Mr. Sammi Awuku. It received great support from farmers, traders, and residents.
The market had a large turnout. Fresh produce, grains, vegetables, and other goods sold out quickly. Many participating farmers and traders felt it was a breakthrough moment. They had struggled with limited market access and post-harvest losses.
One trader said, “I haven’t sold this much in a long time.” They thanked Hon. Sammi Awuku for the event and requested it be held regularly—perhaps every two weeks.
A local farmer expressed relief at the demand for their goods. “We often face post-harvest losses due to lack of buyers,” they said. “My produce was finished before we could even offload.”
Consumers were happy with the quality and affordability of the products. A shopper from Accra stated, “This is a brilliant initiative. I got everything I planned for my family.”
Hon. Sammi Awuku spoke to journalists about his inspiration for the market. He noted that many farmers expressed concerns during his campaign last year. They faced post-harvest losses and low incomes from sales.
“This Ofie Market is my response to that need,” he explained. He hopes it encourages farmers to increase their yields to meet growing demand. The market will be held on the last Saturday of each month; the next one is on April 26, 2025.
Traditional leadership also supported the initiative strongly. Nana Osim Kwatia II, Chief of Amanokrom, praised the MP’s vision for economic growth in the town.
“This is a great initiative,” he said. He noted that it benefits food vendors and small businesses as well.
With its successful debut, Ofie Market aims to empower agribusiness in Akuapem North. Traders, farmers, and residents are excited for future editions.
