Major decongestion exercise to rock Accra central business district from May 20

Major Decongestion Exercise to Start in Accra on May 20

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly will begin a decongestion exercise on May 20. This effort targets traders and unauthorized structures on pavements.

Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the assembly's chief executive, announced this at a press conference on May 15. The operation will be led by the Metropolitan Security Council.

The focus areas include the Central Business District, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and Kaneshie. Allotey emphasized that "our streets are not marketplaces." He stated that pavements are for walking and roads are for driving.

The exercise will start in Okaishie, move through the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange area, and end in Kaneshie. The assembly has consulted market leaders, security agencies, and transport unions about this initiative.

Alfred Ato Allotey-Gaisie, Municipal Chief Executive of Korle Klottey, supported the Mayor during the briefing. He confirmed that both assemblies are united in their goal to clear the streets.

Allotey also announced plans for a 24-hour city operation model. This model will include sanitation and security task forces to assist nighttime businesses.
