Majority of Ghanaians want Council of State abolished – Prof Kwasi Prempeh reveals

Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh chairs the Constitutional Review Committee. He shared preliminary findings showing strong public support for abolishing the Council of State.

At an event on April 30, 2025, he noted many Ghanaians doubt the Council's relevance. They cite its unclear mandate and limited public understanding. Additionally, the Executive often ignores its advice.

Prof. Prempeh stated that if the Council remains, it should resolve high-level issues like peace and conflict resolution. There is a search for a better purpose for the Council of State.

He questioned how to reconstitute its membership to address abolitionist sentiments. Many people want the Council to disappear, which surprised him.

On February 18, 2025, Edward Doe Adjaho was sworn in as Council Chairman. He dismissed calls for abolition during his speech. He emphasized that the Council will play a vital role in national development.

Adjaho acknowledged public doubts about the Council's relevance but assured commitment to making a difference. He promised President Mahama that they would respond day and night to national needs.
