Majority of detained street beggars in Ghana are from Niger – GIS

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has reported on foreign detainees. Most of these detainees are Nigerien nationals. They are part of a crackdown on street begging.

On May 19, 2025, the GIS stated that 2,244 individuals are in custody. Out of these, 2,073 are from Niger. This represents over 92 percent of the total. The rest include 138 Nigerians, 28 Burkinabes, one Guinean, and one Malian.

All arrested individuals have undergone profiling and security screening. They have been separated by age and gender to meet human rights standards.

Repatriation efforts resumed on Saturday after delays due to screening. So far, 925 individuals have been deported: 819 Nigeriens and 106 Nigerians.

The GIS provides meals and medical care at the holding center. However, new arrests are paused to avoid overcrowding.

The Service emphasized that the operation is humane and respects migrant rights. They are committed to professionalism and due process.

Authorities plan to continue clearing beggars from the streets. They aim to dismantle related criminal networks as well. The GIS seeks public cooperation and support for this effort.

As Ghana's lead agency in migration management, the GIS aims for a fair immigration system. This system supports national security and development.

The Special Operation will resume in due course according to the Service's statement.
