Makers and Partners, along with Mothercare International School, DVLA Plaspack, and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, celebrated World Environment Day 2025. They held a tree-planting event at the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Critical Care and Emergency Hospital.
As part of the “Tree for Life Initiative,” they planted 86 trees. Students and staff from partner institutions actively participated in this effort. The goal was to promote environmental sustainability.
World Environment Day is observed globally on June 5 each year. It encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to protect our environment.
Mr. Wilfred Neneh Addico from MAP stated that they are replacing trees lost last year due to harsh weather. He emphasized that this initiative is ongoing, not just a yearly gesture.
Last year, MAP planted 170 trees with an 80% survival rate. Mr. Addico highlighted the importance of nurturing these trees after planting them.
He mentioned that this initiative is part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. It aims to give back to society and teach children about tree planting.
Children play a crucial role in environmental sustainability, he said. They need empowerment to take action for the environment.
Flight Lieutenant Dede Assasey from GAF noted the area's hot temperatures necessitate more trees. Planting trees creates a greener space for patients and visitors while helping store carbon.
“The trees give us life,” he said. “We should replace them even if they don’t grow within our lifetime.”
Madam Peace Abasa-Addo, Headmistress of Mothercare International School, spoke about instilling environmental consciousness in children. She wants them to appreciate tree planting as a responsibility.
She added that school subjects include topics on environmental conservation. Tree planting exercises help students apply what they learn in class.
Madam Abasa-Addo also mentioned an upcoming durbar event with Zoomlion. They will educate students on waste segregation and energy conservation.
Madam Esi Ribeiro from DERA Consult emphasized including children in ESG efforts. She noted many career opportunities exist within the ESG field today.
Organizations seek to understand their impact on the environment, she explained. The younger generation can benefit from these emerging opportunities.
