President John Mahama regrets the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS.
He stated, "The recent decision by these countries is regrettable."
Mahama spoke at the launch of ECOWAS's 50th anniversary in Ghana's capital. He emphasized that diplomacy fosters mutual respect and common interests.
Despite their withdrawal, he urged for ongoing dialogue with these leaders.
Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have officially left ECOWAS after a year of tensions.
Relations soured after military coups in Niger (2023), Burkina Faso (2022), and Mali (2020).
Following the coup in Niger, ECOWAS imposed severe sanctions on the country. These included border closures and a no-fly zone for commercial flights. Central bank assets were also frozen.
